Tonal Receives Honorable Mention by Fast Company 2019 Innovation by Design Awards

September 11, 2019

The Tonal Strength Training System was given an honorable mention in the Health and Wellness Category by Fast Company’s prestigious 2019 “Innovation By Design” awards.

Tonal is the first digital weight strength training system with interactive video workouts powered by machine learning. Tonal is like having an entire gym and personal trainer in your home. It is an elegant wall-mounted compact unit that combines sleek hardware with on-demand personalized coaching. Powered by an electromagnetic resistance engine, Tonal’s digital weights provide smooth and precise weight in single-pound increments that respond to you automatically.

“Tonal was the ultimate comprehensive design problem—packed with ergonomic, aesthetic, user experience, material and functional challenges,” said Dan Harden the chief designer.

Innovation by Design, now in its eighth year, acknowledges the designers and businesses committed to solving global issues through meaningful design. It is the only competition that honors creative work “at the intersection of design, business, and innovation.” Says Stephanie Mehta, editor-in-chief of Fast Company, “For decades, designers have facilitated overconsumption. Now, the most ambitious in the field are addressing the grave problems consumption has wrought.”

Fast Company’s roster of global design experts only gave honorable mentions to approximately 10% of its record-breaking 4,300 entries this year. Entries were evaluated across 21 categories based on their level of innovation in terms of functionality, originality, beauty, sustainability, depth of user insight, cultural impact and business impact. The winners will be featured in Fast Company’s October 2019 issue.
