Whipsaw took home a 2020 Red Dot award for its revolutionary design of the Cisco Meraki MV Series, a sophisticated yet approachable line of indoor and outdoor security cameras. Until now, public security cameras have been synonymous with limited functionality and intimidating designs. The MV line disrupts this product space by being elegant to behold, simple to operate, and offering advanced image analysis and onboard video processing. They are widely used in places such as offices, schools, and commercial spaces, and engineered to record and analyze content constantly. Whipsaw’s fine bowl form and glossy lens cover is a one-of-a-kind design that brings a feeling of opulence to the security camera category for the first time.

This camera line was the result of a close collaboration between Whipsaw industrial designers and Meraki engineers.

“In the end, we successfully combined art and technology to create a beautiful and functional form,” said Akifusa Nakazawa, Whipsaw senior designer for the Meraki MV Line.

“With their designs, the award winners are setting new standards in their industry. I wish to congratulate them most sincerely on their success,” said Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot.

The Meraki MV line will be added to the “Design on Stage” exhibition at the Red Dot Design Museum Essen on June 22, 2020. It will also be featured in Red Dot’s upcoming online exhibition and 2020/2021 yearbook.

“We’re happy that the Cisco Meraki cameras were singled out for a Red Dot. It was one of those projects where everything just clicked. Great client, worthy design challenge, happy end-users, and now an esteemed award,” said Dan Harden, Whipsaw CEO and design strategist on the Meraki project.

This year, the Red Dot awards received more than 6,500 products for consideration from 60 countries. Red Dot’s international jury took many variables into account while making their 2020 selections, including aesthetics, materials, craftsmanship, surface structure, ergonomics, and functionality. Red Dot has stood as one of the world’s largest and most prestigious design competitions since 1955. This is Whipsaw’s 29th Red Dot award for product design.
