Senior Design Strategist

We are looking for a dynamic Strategist to be a vital part of our experience design team. Our clients seek groundbreaking, best-in-class digital, physical, and service-oriented experiences that create far-reaching positive impacts for stakeholders. As a Strategist, you will collaborate across disciplines to drive projects from inception to completion, including working with industrial and interaction designers, project managers, and client stakeholders. Your role is crucial to navigating complexity while maintaining a user-focused perspective and staying aligned with business and impact objectives. Whipsaw is a highly acclaimed strategy, industrial design, digital design, and product development consulting firm based in San Francisco. For over 25 years, Whipsaw has created successful products and immersive experiences for diverse industries, including consumer electronics, housewares, computing, robotics, medical, scientific, and commercial products for clients such as Google, Meta, Uber, Johnson & Johnson, and Tonal. The ideal candidate will have a passion for using design for positive societal and environmental transformation, for collaboratively tackling complex and unique challenges with a multidisciplinary team, for participatory design, and a desire to build rich, digital, physical, and service-oriented experiences. The ideal candidate will be able to navigate ambiguity and will be a great communicator. This role will be a hybrid position based out of the San Francisco studio with at least 3 days in-studio per week.

What you'll do

  • Grow our experience innovation capabilities from defining the high-level process to creating research protocols, concept ideation, concept validation, and concept refinement.
  • Conduct research to deeply understand and communicate the needs of user groups across service landscapes, seamlessly connecting physical and digital experiences. Develop comprehensive research plans and guide the synthesis of qualitative and quantitative findings.
  • Build compelling research and design narratives for client stakeholders. Communicate research findings and strategic recommendations through engaging presentations.
  • Act as the advocate for target audiences and stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Develop brand strategy documentation to inform brand design exercises. 
  • Facilitate client stakeholders in defining project goals and desired impacts that align with business needs.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and innovations to provide forward-thinking insights.

What you'll bring

  • 5+ years of experience using human-centered practices to guide research and design work from concepts to shipped and scaled experiences
  • Systems thinking skills to find direction and meaning in quantitative and qualitative research data and able to translate complex scenarios into actionable insights for design
  • Ability to make abductive leaps to originate exciting future-oriented products and services that simultaneously solve the needs of humans, businesses, and society
  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Design, Business, Marketing, or a related field
  • Proficiency in creating detailed research plans and synthesizing research data
  • Well-articulated work examples and an ability to communicate your decisions with strong verbal, written, and visual presentation skills
  • Collaborative mindset with experience working in cross-functional teams

You May Have (but it’s not a dealbreaker if you don’t)

  • Familiarity with physical product design and how UX methods work in both the physical and digital product spaces
  • Experience working in an agency or consulting environment
